Interview with a Versus Curl Ambassador
This week we talked to one of our Versus Curls Ambassadors about her Curl Journey and the advice she’d have for other Curly Girls considering a new outlook on their curls -
Versus: What encouraged you to dedicate to your own curl journey? Did you always love your natural curls?
Selena: What encouraged me to dedicate my own curl journey is when I realized that my curls were beautiful before the damage. I would always get compliments so I made up my mind that health over length is way more important. Shortly, I decided to show more love to my curls and help other curlies out there.
V: Can you describe the trial and error of finding products/cuts/etc. that work for you and your curls?
S: I went though a lot of trial and error in my curl journey at the beginning. I was tired of my curls feelings so greasy and oily from the products that I thought were good for curls and decided to do a little more research in the products that were in some of my products. I started to follow hair salons that specialized in curls and went with some of their routines and noticed a difference. This is when I first started to use DevaCurl which did my curls amazing even though I still had damage from straightening my hair constantly. I can say that is the real start of me taking care of my curls.
V: What is the biggest mistake you ever made with your curls or lesson learned?
S: The biggest mistake is straightening my hair constantly!!! I would get my hair straightened every 3 weeks just because at the time I was young, didn’t know how to properly take care of my curls and thought it was the “easy” way to do my hair. BIG MISTAKE.
V: How did you go about finding a salon/stylist to help you with your curls?
S: I found the perfect salon watching Youtube videos believe it or not. I was watching my favorite You-Tubers getting DevaCuts and wanted one but didn’t think they would have a hair salon that specializes in curls in my area. I went to DevaCurls website and discovered they have an option to find a Deva Stylists near me and that is when I found the best salon a.k.a Versus Salon.
V: What do you feel is most important for curly clients to look for in finding a hair stylist that will suit their needs?
S: What I think I feel is most important for curly clients to look for finding a hairstylist is that one they are comfortable with their hair stylist and that they trust that stylist with their hair.
V: How has Versus Salon impacted your curl journey?
S: Versus Salon has impacted my curl journey a lot in many ways. I already loved my curls but they made me love them even more by making them even healthier. Second, honestly I wouldn’t be in my curls journey right now if I didn’t go with my gut and give them a try and did not trust them with my curls and I’m so glad I went with my gut.
V: What's the most valuable thing you learned by coming to Versus Salon?
S: The most valuable thing I learned by coming to Versus Salon is that it time is key. It takes time for your curls to snap back if they were damaged like mine and to love them in the process.
V: What advice would you have for a curly girl in the beginning stages of learning to love her curls and work with them?
S: A lesson I have for a curly girl in the beginning stages is again is that time is key. Everyone’s curls are unique in their own beautiful way. You might see another girls’ curls getting back healthy at a faster pace and yours isn’t, it takes time. Also, dedication. Being dedicated to your curls is important because curls aren’t going to get back healthy on their own unless you put the effort and dedication towards them. And remember, to love your curls no matter what!
