What Type of Treatment Should You Book?

We go to the gym, follow healthy eating plans, and schedule routine visits to maintain our physical health, but many clients don’t realize that their hair also requires routine check-ups to maintain its healthy shine and growth!

Steam Treatments are our preferred method of treatments because the gentle heat opens hair cuticles to soak in all the benefits of the treatment without risking heat damage. We offer two main types of steam treatments - protein and hydration - and typically recommend once per month visits to maintain the health and integrity of your natural tresses! How do you know which one is right for you, though?

Protein treatments focus on nourishing the hair with all of the vitamins it needs to stay shiny, while adding extra strength with protein. There is such a thing as too much protein, though! If you have too much protein in your hair, you will notice brittle strands and broken ends, as well as loosened curls. While the purpose of the treatment is to add strength, too much protein can cause stress. Protein treatments should be administered no more than four times per year unless your stylist advises otherwise, and for this reason we typically do not recommend at-home protein treatments.

Moisture treatments (or Hydration Treatments) are ideal for addressing frizz, dryness, and color-processing damage. Moisture helps to replenish thirsty hair to encourage a sleek, finished look. Moisture treatments can be performed much more frequently than protein treatments without risking over-doing it. For clients with curly hair, we recommend once-per-month moisture treatments to keep frizz at bay and encourage a consistent curl pattern. We offer several product options for keeping up with these treatments at home.

How do you know which treatment is best for your locks? If you hair is limp and stringy, protein will help add volume back into your locks. If your hair is frizzy and dry, a moisture treatment is an ideal place to start. Why Do We Love Steam Treatments?

When applying treatments, deep conditioners, and masks to the hair in an effort to restore health and moisture, the best method of processing is using a steamer. This allows moist heat to nourish the hair cuticle, which has a number of benefits for your locks!

Shampoo/Cut/Blowdry vs. DevaCut

One of the most common questions we receive is, "What is the difference between a regular haircut and a DevaCut?" or "Why can't I just get a regular haircut with curly hair?"

A standard haircut, or a Shampoo/Cut/Blowdry, is a service in which the hair is cleansed and conditioned, then the cut is performed on wet hair. This allows for precision cutting and ease of styling after the cut is finished. This service works best on straight hair since the hair shaft doesn't change shape as much as it dries.

When curls are wet, though, their shape is altered and often stretched. If a cut is performed on wet curls, once they dry and shrink back to their natural bouncy pattern, the cut and shape of the hair will be totally different from when it was wet. Many curly girls who receive a standard haircut in salons will complain of awkward "triangle" shapes and have difficulty styling their hair after their service.

 Cutting curls and curly hair care in general is unfortunately not taught in general cosmetology programs, leaving curly girls underserved and misunderstood in most salon environments. Our DevaCurl stylists are specially trainedand certifiedto cut, shape, color, and style curly hair in a way that maximizes each clients' unique curl pattern.

During a DevaCut service, clients are asked to arrive with their hair completely dried and free of ponytails that may affect the way their curls naturally fall. The cut is performed first to create shape and maintain the health of the hair. We get it – you’re very busy, your wallet is a bit strapped, and you don’t want to make a trip all the way to the salon just to trim up your ends that are driving you mad. It starts to feel like your dead ends have a personal vendetta against you and your ability to style your hair, your preferred stylist is booked, and standing in front of the bathroom mirror you decide you’ve had enough. When this happens to you, we want you to take a deep breath, back away from the kitchen scissors, and call your stylist. Here’s why –

Hair cutting shears are designed with specially-sized blades and razor sharp edges to provide a blunt, even cut at the end of the hair shaft. This prevents the hair from breaking and becoming damaged, and ensures a more even grow-out.

When using house scissors to cut hair, which have a larger blade that is typically much more dull than shears, cutting causes jagged ends, split ends, and damaged hair shafts. This can hinder hair growth, shine, and overall health of your mane. If the proper technique is not used to trim grown-out bangs, the hair can revolt and stick straight out, straight up, or work against natural cow-licks.
