Tips for Transitioning Your Natural Curls
We get it, you want to loosen your curls and make your hair more manageable. A relaxer seems logical right? Well yes, but when you finally decide to embrace those natural curls, its going to take some work and TLC. A lot of clients think about the immediate gratification of a relaxing service, but usually do not consider the transition back until its too late. It will take some thoughtful, consistent and patient work to get those curls back on point, but we have your back, below are tips form our Versus Curl Specialists!
Your Scalp Is Going To Needs Some Serious Detoxing
Relaxers contain chemicals that will burn and irritate your scalp, leave behind dry and scabbing skin and causes damage to your hair follicle itself. When you’re transitioning, it is good to plan for a few months of work of treatments to help get your scalp, which is the base for hair growth, to a healthy state.
Your Hair Follicles Will Become Your New Best Friend
There are a few ways that you can encourage and stimulate hair growth right down to the base, which is your scalp. First, we always recommend implementing scalp massage into your weekly routine. Increasing blood flow to your scalp will encourage nutrient delivery, and help to stimulate the growth of new hair strands as well as improve the overall health of your follicle and scalp.
Take Deep Conditioning Over the Top
Okay so we don’t mean lather on a ton of crazy products or turn your kitchen into a science experiment on the daily with at home DIY masks. The deep conditioning treatments need to be thoughtful and consistent. We recommend at least once a month, but during the transition time if you can fit a treatment once a week into your schedule, your hair will thank you.
It May Take a While to See What Your Actual Hair Texture Is
THIS. RIGHT. HERE. The chemical makeup of relaxing products is made to chemically change the structure of your hair, loosening that curl out. When you are transitioning, a little trial and error will happen. You need to see how your hair reacts to certain product lines and change them out to see what works best for your particular journey. We always recommend products made specially for curly girls, and professional products are a must. Avoid drug store products and online products.
Don’t let any of this freak you and make you shy away from embracing your natural curl, and as always we are here for any questions.
